Broadband a basic utility for 21st century

The National Broadband Plan sent to Congress by the Federal Communications Commission is fundamental to the future economic well-being of the United States. Sounds grandiloquent, but it is really that important and basic.
Connecting 100 million American homes to high-speed Internet services will not only link the country to work, school, health care and public safety, but also stir innovation and investment to vastly improve the use and capacity of those online ties.

Dormant volcano erupts 'near' glacier in Iceland

Dormant volcano erupts 'near' glacier in Iceland

Hundreds of people have been evacuated from their homes in southern Iceland after a volcano dormant for almost 200 years erupted.

The eruptions began shortly before midnight on Saturday near the Eyjafjallajoekull glacier, triggering fears of flooding when several craters along a popular rift began spewing lava and smoke.

Some 450 people have so far been evacuated from an area southeast the capital, Reykjavik, and the country's aviation authority canceled all domestic flights and discouraged other aircraft from flying close to the area of the volcano.

Authorities initially feared that the eruption was below the 160km glacier, which is the country's fifth largest ice mass and a state of emergency was immediately declared.

Geologists at the University of Iceland, however, told the national broadcaster, RUV, that aerial survey of the area seemed to indicate that the eruption had not occurred below the ice.

The ice-capped volcano last erupted in the 1820s.

Jobless rate in Hawaii reaches 43,000

March 4, 2010

More than 15 million people are officially jobless nationally. In Hawaii, the unemployed rose by nearly 5,000 in January alone to reach 43,450.

Darwin Ching, director of the state Labor Department, says past experience indicates that unemployment will rise in Hawaii for about 10 to 18 months after the economy has bottomed out. However, after the national recessions in 1990 and 2001, it took 31 and 46 months before employment rose to its previous national peaks.

While Hawaii continues to cope with the economic abyss, legislators must see clear to prioritize and bolster state agencies assigned with rising caseloads to help individuals and families on unemployment benefits, food stamps, Medicaid and other survival services.
